It always feels nice to go back in time and see some beautiful games from the past. Today we are going to travel back 19 years, and see a game played by the legendary Garry Kasparov against Sergei Movsesian in 2000. The game is quite popular and is known for Kasparov’s fantastic exchange sacrifice at move 13 in the Sicilian Scheveningen Variation. The following position arrived in the middlegame, 10 moves after Kasparov’s exchange sacrifice in an effort to destroy White’s king safety, which he did well so far. Black to play As you can see, Kasparov is not just down an exchange, but also down a pawn. If Black is a bit careless here, White will soon open up the kingside by pushing his pawns, and the tables will be turned. Therefore, it’s a critical position – how should Black proceed here?
