Ian Nepomniachtchi had won the prize that mattered with a day to spare, but was taken down by Ding Liren, whose 3rd win in a row saw him regain the world no. 3 spot. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave clinched second place with a win over Wang Hao, before the Chinese grandmaster shocked the chess world by announcing his retirement. Anish Giri lost again, this time to Kirill Alekseenko, but still tied Fabiano Caruana for 3rd place.
